I’ve always wanted to learn Welsh.  I was a tween when I read the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper and was so entranced.  Now, in the age of internets, I can at last make a real start!

Zener and I love long words.  So we decided to learn the longest place name in Europe, which also happens to be Welsh.

It is:  Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Isn’t that brilliant?  And I actually spelled that out from memory!

According to Wikipedia, the town got its name as a sort of tourist gimmick – one of the earliest examples of such.  I can pronounce the entire thing, but I have no idea how my accent is.  Z has learned the first 7 syllables fluently, though the ll and rolled r sounds give him trouble.
