Hello!

Who We Are

Updated March 5, 2014 : DUDE, I had completely forgotten that I had written this page.  It was current about 3 years ago – so much has changed!

As of April of last year, I moved out of my “partner’s” house.  With her, I became a ghost of myself.  But I stayed until she finally did something so completely unforgivable (and illegal) that I had to leave.  I’m so glad I did – I’m very much enjoying being single and far, far away from the drama of a mentally ill narcissist!

Zener’s still in school, but his 4th grade teacher has been so good with him so far.  He’s made some real progress and I’m so happy for him!

I didn’t change anything from my original about page.  All preserved below for posterity or something.  Probably more laziness.

——————————————————————————–
I’m a mom who might be homeschooling my son in coming months.  By “homeschooling”, I mean in a formal, un-enroll-him-from-public-school way.  Because we already learn at home, in the car, on the bus, at the train museum, at the art museum, at the park, at the beach, in the backyard, on the computer, from books, from videos…

I grew up in a smallish town in WV where many of my closest friends were homeschooled, so I’ve always viewed it as a positive alternative to public schooling.  (Frankly, there were times I was really jealous of their freedom to learn and do what they wanted on their own time… but that’s another story).  I’ve been reading a bit of John Holt, lots of Grace Llewellyn, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading “And the Sky-lark Sings with Me” by David Albert.

My day job is teaching physical anthropology part-time.
So far, I only have one kid:  Z-boy, age 7 (as of mid-2011).  He loves electricity, he loves being read to, not into reading on his own yet.

I’m divorced, have an ex-hub who will definitely introduce unique challenges to this potential homeschooling adventure.  My current partner, Lady, teaches at a community college and is a union rep.  She’s constantly struck by Z-boy’s natural witticisms and word play.

Also, we’re faith-free.  You know, non-religious.  Atheist-ish agnostics. With a touch of cultural Judaism (from ex-hub’s side) and a dash of Wicca and Lutheranism (my side)  although we may decide in coming months to attend UU church or Meeting (for Worship, aka “Quaker Church”) for cultural and communal reasons.

What this Blog’s about

Mostly rambly stuff, what works, what doesn’t, my own ideas about education, art, and god knows what-all else.  I just started it, ok?  Give me a few posts to figure it out! (July 20, 2011)

So far, I have felt the need to edit, and re-edit, every single post (including this one).  This is definitely a work in progress, and I will change stuff.  Probably quite a lot.  You have been warned. (July 21, 2011)

  1. Thanks for liking my “Me and Jackie Chan” piece.
I like your blog, too. It’s similar to mine – written with no pretenses, from post to post, no long-range plans! Just doing it…
