I’ve always wanted to learn Welsh. I was a tween when I read the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper and was so entranced. Now, in the age of internets, I can at last make a real start!
Zener and I love long words. So we decided to learn the longest place name in Europe, which also happens to be Welsh.
It is: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
Isn’t that brilliant? And I actually spelled that out from memory!
According to Wikipedia, the town got its name as a sort of tourist gimmick – one of the earliest examples of such. I can pronounce the entire thing, but I have no idea how my accent is. Z has learned the first 7 syllables fluently, though the ll and rolled r sounds give him trouble.
